Résumé

The seasonal fluctuation of the epiphyton community on water hyacinth was investigated in an aquatic treatment pilot plant of the Doh-Hoh-Numa Bog at Tsukuba Science City of Japan. During the active growth period of water hyacinth, the dominant organisms in the epiphyton community on the roots were species of Fragilaria, Synedra, Navicula, Eunotia, Mougeotia, Coleochaete, Bulbochaete and Staurastrum. Staurastrum species attached loosely as mero-epiphyton, and species of both Coleochaete and Bulbochaete attached firmly as eu-epiphyton. Others were either mero- or eu-epiphytic species. The epiphyton community is the major agent for the removal of nutrients from the water when the growth of water hyacinth declines in the fall.
